Miami’s 2027 recruiting class landed a major addition when four-star linebacker AJ Randle Jr. announced his commitment to the Hurricanes on May 21. Since then, discussion around the Garner High School standout has centered on his rankings, athletic profile, and what he brings to Mario Cristobal’s program.

A closer look at the available facts shows that most of the reporting surrounding Randle’s commitment has been accurate, though a few details deserve additional context.

Randle is unquestionably one of the nation’s top linebacker prospects. According to 247Sports, he ranks as the No. 6 linebacker in the 2027 class, validating descriptions of him as a top-10 linebacker nationally. Where some reporting becomes slightly misleading is in discussions about his overall ranking. While there have been suggestions that Miami’s staff views him more highly than his “top-100 ranking,” Randle is already inside the national top 100. He currently sits at No. 95 overall in the 247Sports Composite rankings.

The North Carolina native attends Garner High School in Garner and is ranked as the No. 5 player in the state for the 2027 cycle. All major recruiting services classify him as a four-star prospect.

One area that has generated some confusion is the description of Randle as a “two-sport” Miami commit. While it’s true that Randle has discussed competing in track and field at Miami, the label doesn’t tell the full story. Randle is actually a three-sport athlete, participating in football, basketball, and track and field at Garner.

His track accomplishments are particularly noteworthy. Just days before announcing his commitment to Miami, Randle captured the North Carolina 7A state championship in the 300-meter hurdles. During conversations with Miami’s staff, he has also discussed the possibility of running the 400-meter hurdles at the collegiate level, making him one of the more versatile athletes in the Hurricanes’ recruiting class.

Randle chose Miami over an impressive list of finalists that included Florida, Georgia, NC State, Ohio State, and South Carolina. He reportedly holds 55 scholarship offers and made his decision public with a simple message to Hurricanes fans: “Canes Nation, I’m home! We’ll talk soon.”

The commitment was further solidified by an official visit to Coral Gables during the May 30-June 1 weekend. Randle has repeatedly pointed to head coach Mario Cristobal and defensive coordinator/linebackers coach Corey Hetherman as major factors in his decision. Multiple reports identify Hetherman as one of the primary recruiters responsible for bringing Randle into Miami’s 2027 class.

There is also a minor discrepancy regarding Randle’s listed size. Some reports list him at 6-foot-3 and 210 pounds, while others place him at 6-foot-3 and 215 pounds. Such differences are common for developing high school prospects and likely reflect updated measurements rather than conflicting information.

Perhaps most importantly for Miami, Randle became the Hurricanes’ first linebacker commitment in the 2027 recruiting cycle. His pledge helped push Miami’s class into the national top five rankings and gave the coaching staff a cornerstone defender around whom to build the rest of the class.

One claim that remains difficult to independently verify involves Randle’s efforts to help Miami recruit additional prospects, including Jaiden Bryant. While recruit-to-recruit recruiting is common and Randle has discussed working alongside fellow commits to attract more talent, no independent confirmation currently verifies the specifics of that effort.

The overall picture remains clear. AJ Randle is a legitimate four-star prospect, a top-10 linebacker nationally, a top-100 overall recruit, and a standout three-sport athlete who recently won a state championship in track and field. Beyond a few ranking and athletic-profile clarifications, the reporting surrounding his commitment to Miami has largely held up under scrutiny.
