  • Inter Miami has made a formal approach for Casemiro, and the former Manchester United star is reportedly open to the move.
  • The deal faces two major hurdles: LA Galaxy’s MLS discovery rights and the financial challenge of fitting Casemiro’s salary into MLS rules.
  • Miami views Casemiro as a potential replacement for retired midfield legend Sergio Busquets as the club looks to remain an MLS contender.

The name on every Inter Miami fan’s lips this weekend is Casemiro.

The veteran Brazilian midfielder is set to leave Manchester United at the end of the 2025-26 season, and according to transfer insider Fabrizio Romano, he is genuinely open to the idea of bringing his talents to South Florida.

For a club still adjusting to life after the retirement of several key veterans, the possibility of adding one of the most accomplished defensive midfielders of the modern era is generating plenty of excitement. But despite the growing buzz, the situation remains far more complicated than some of the headlines suggest.

Casemiro, whose full name is Carlos Henrique Casimiro, was born on February 23, 1992, in São José dos Campos, Brazil. At 34 years old, he remains one of the most decorated players at his position.

Standing 6-foot-1, Casemiro built his reputation during a dominant run at Real Madrid, where he helped anchor one of the most successful teams in club history. His trophy haul includes five UEFA Champions League titles, three La Liga championships, three FIFA Club World Cups, three UEFA Super Cups, and a Copa América title with Brazil in 2019.

After moving to Manchester United, he added an EFL Cup title in 2023. The Premier League club officially announced in January 2026 that Casemiro would depart at the conclusion of the season, making him one of the most sought-after free agents available this summer.

Inter Miami has already taken concrete action.

According to reports from Yahoo Sports and Fabrizio Romano, the club has submitted a formal proposal to Casemiro’s representatives. That alone signals serious interest from Miami’s front office, which is looking to strengthen a squad that has undergone significant changes since winning the MLS Cup.

Several factors appear to be working in Miami’s favor. The opportunity to play alongside Lionel Messi remains a major attraction. South Florida’s lifestyle and family considerations have also reportedly played a role in Casemiro’s openness to the move. At the same time, Inter Miami continues to pitch an ambitious long-term project aimed at keeping the club among the league’s elite.

Still, there is an important distinction between interest and a completed deal.

Romano’s reporting has consistently described a “first proposal” being sent while noting that Casemiro is “open” to joining Miami. While that indicates genuine momentum, it falls short of confirming advanced negotiations or an imminent agreement.

Even if both sides are interested, two major obstacles remain.

The first involves MLS discovery rights.

Under league rules, the LA Galaxy reportedly hold discovery rights for Casemiro. Those rights give the Galaxy priority within MLS should they wish to pursue the player. Before Inter Miami could finalize a signing, the club would likely need to reach an agreement with Los Angeles to acquire those rights.

The second challenge is financial.

Casemiro reportedly earned more than $20 million annually during his time at Manchester United. That figure far exceeds standard MLS salary structures. Inter Miami would likely need to utilize a Designated Player slot, negotiate a significantly reduced salary, or create additional roster flexibility to make the numbers work.

The timing of Miami’s pursuit is no accident.

Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets both retired after helping the club capture the 2025 MLS Cup. Their departures left major leadership and talent gaps throughout the roster, particularly in midfield.

Busquets’ retirement created a vacancy that few players in world football are qualified to fill. Casemiro’s defensive awareness, experience, and trophy-winning pedigree make him one of the rare candidates capable of stepping into a similar role.

If the move ultimately happens, Casemiro could form a formidable partnership with Rodrigo De Paul in the center of the park, giving Miami one of the most accomplished midfield combinations in Major League Soccer.

For now, however, Inter Miami supporters should view the situation as a promising possibility rather than a done deal.

The club has made its move. Casemiro appears receptive. But discovery rights, salary negotiations, and potential competition from European and Saudi clubs still stand between interest and a signed contract.

What is clear is that one of the most successful midfielders of his generation is seriously considering a move to South Florida, and Inter Miami has already positioned itself firmly in the conversation.
