Barkov, Tkachuk Headed to Switzerland: Panthers Stars Represent at IIHF Worlds
Missing the playoffs stings — but Sunrise will still have plenty to cheer for this month.

The Florida Panthers won’t be playing for the Stanley Cup this spring, but two of their biggest stars will still be on the ice this month — and playing for something pretty special. Captain Aleksander Barkov and Olympic gold medalist Matthew Tkachuk are both headed to the 2026 IIHF World Championship in Switzerland, running May 15–31 in Zurich and Fribourg.
Barkov’s Long-Awaited Return
For Barkov, this tournament carries extra meaning. The Finnish captain has not played a single competitive game this season after suffering a torn right knee requiring reconstructive surgery — on the very first day of training camp in September. He was originally named Finland’s Olympic captain before the injury derailed those plans entirely.
Now, cleared and ready, Barkov has been working out at the Panthers’ IcePlex in Fort Lauderdale and practicing with the team in preparation for his return. Panthers GM Bill Zito confirmed he is “100 percent healthy and ready to play,” and coach Paul Maurice was equally blunt: “There’s nothing else to do with his knee. His numbers are fantastic.”
Barkov’s last World Championship appearance was a decade ago. He’s not taking this lightly.
“I am very excited about that,” Barkov said. “Last time I played there was 10 years ago. It’s a big honor to represent Finland and it was one of those childhood dreams to win World Championships. That’s a big goal for me.”
He’ll be joined on Team Finland by fellow Panther Anton Lundell.
🇺🇸 Tkachuk Chasing History
Tkachuk’s motivation is different — and historic. The 28-year-old winger already has two Stanley Cup rings (2024, 2025) and an Olympic gold medal from February’s Games in Milan. A World Championship gold would make him the first American ever to complete the “Triple Gold Club” — a distinction only 30 players in history have achieved.
He confirmed his participation Thursday on the Pat McAfee Show, and left no doubt about his mindset.
“I think it’s such an honor to wear the USA jersey,” Tkachuk said. “Playing for the Olympics and then going here a few months later, I still have that feeling I had representing the United States back in February in Milan. How could I not want to be a part of that again? We’re not going over there for a vacation. We better give ourselves a chance to win.”
This will be Tkachuk’s first-ever World Championship appearance — previous playoff runs with the Panthers always kept him away. He plans to arrive “a couple days into the tournament,” with Team USA’s opener set for May 15 against host Switzerland.
Panthers Assistant GM Brett Peterson will serve as Team USA’s General Manager at the tournament — his second time in that role.
